Great Eastern Cutlery #38 Northfield Grinling Whittler

Here’s another look at the Great Eastern Cutlery #38 Grinling Whittler. Unlike the Tidioute we posted the other day, however, this one bears the Northfield UN-X-LD marque. And in place of Black Camel Bone, this one’s scaled in Burnt Stag.

It’s a fine knife, either way, but let’s be honest — Stag is a star.

Zero Tolerance ZT0566

Zero Tolerance and Rick Hinderer have joined forces again, and here’s the result — the ZT0566CFM390. Unscrambling that alphanumeric mouthful, we find a more compact version of the ZT0560 with carbon fiber and M390 stainless.

Repeat after me: WOW.

Great Eastern Cutlery: Patina grows, character shows

Before the advent of mass-produced stainless-steel knives, virtually all blades were made of carbon steel. When a knife, like this three-blade GEC, developed a patina of gray or even black, the change in color simply was an indication of use.

Some of us still consider patina a sign of character — both of the tool and the owner.

The 1095 carbon steel used by Great Eastern Cutlery is known for taking a wonderful patina. It’s the kind of character that suits us just fine.

Great Eastern Cutlery #38 Tidioute Grinling Whittler

The classic whittler pattern is one of the most useful slipjoints we know of, and we especially love the Great Eastern Cutlery #38 Tidioute Grinling Whittler with its tapered serpentine frame.

We thought it couldn’t get any better — and then we got a batch of them in Black Camel Bone.

GEC really hit a home run with this one and, we’re happy to say, it’s exclusive to KnivesShipFree. The nature of dyed bone means that each one is unique — some are dark, some light and some wonderfully variegated.

The knife we chose for today’s wallpaper is just one example from this group of strikingly attractive knives.

Fiddeback Forge: Beauty meets function

Every time we get another batch of Fiddleback Forge knives, Andy Roy’s hand-forged work impresses us more. Few knifemakers produce tools that so successfully combine performance, comfort and beauty.

Bark River Little Carver 3V, in the garden

Those of us who live in colder northern climes soon will be preparing our gardens for the growing season. It’s a lot of work and, to be honest, it can be tempting to postpone it ’til we find a bit more motivation.

This image — highlighted by the handy Bark River Little Carver in CPM 3V — is a friendly reminder that the payoff later will be worth the effort now.
